In an older suburb of Bloemfontein, the client (a singer/  musician) wanted to erect a small but independent flat next to an old house. The idea was to keep the building as simple as possible due to the restricted budget, yet take advantage of the site that borders a conservation area. A central double volume over the dining area gives the impression of space. Northern orientation allows ample light into the open plan living areas downstairs and beautiful views from the two bedrooms upstairs. Services were housed to the south of the structure where the roof was tilted down to create privacy in the back yard of the existing house.
